THE GLITCH

Violet sat in the back of the classroom, staring absently at the chalkboard. The teacher's voice droned on, the words blending into a monotonous hum that did nothing to focus her attention. She had skipped class the day before.

Now, sitting here, she could still feel the strange presence in the air. A lingering sensation she couldn't quite shake. It was as if something was waiting for her.

But what? She couldn't tell. After a few moments, she forced herself to push the thoughts away. She had to focus. The final exam was just a few weeks away, and she couldn't afford to get distracted.

As the bell rang, signaling the end of class, Violet stood up, grabbed her bag, and walked out of the classroom. The air outside was crisp and cool, a welcome contrast to the stifling atmosphere inside.

The walk home was uneventful, her mind wandering from thought to thought, but always returning to that strange feeling.

When she entered her room, a small shiver ran down her spine. The door creaked open, and she stepped inside, immediately noticing something was off. Her laptop was open. It wasn't just a small crack in the screen like she might have left it, no, the screen was fully on, the light glowing softly in the dim room. The last time she had used it, it had been shut down, and she was certain she had powered it off before leaving.

Her books were also out of place. They were scattered across her desk, some knocked over as if someone had been looking through them. Violet furrowed her brow, confusion creeping into her chest. There was no reason anyone would be in her room. She was an only child, and her mother was never one to go through her things. She had always respected Violet's space.

Still, she brushed off the uneasy feeling. Maybe her mother had decided to tidy up while she was gone. Or perhaps she had forgotten to shut down her laptop, leaving it on by accident. Violet had a habit of getting lost in her thoughts, so it wouldn't be the first time she had forgotten something like that.

She walked over to her desk, moved the books back into place, and powered down her laptop before heading to the bathroom. A warm shower helped clear her mind, the steady flow of water washing away the unease she had felt. Afterward, she wrapped herself in a towel, dried her hair, and made her way back to her bedroom.

For the first time since she had walked in, the room felt normal again. No strange energy lingered in the air. She sighed with relief, glad that whatever it was had passed. Maybe it was just her overactive imagination getting the best of her. It had been a long week, after all.

As she sat down on her bed, her mind turned to the one constant in her life these days the one thing that always seemed to make her feel connected, grounded.

Elior.

She smiled softly as she reached for her phone and opened their chat. His name always brought a sense of warmth to her chest, a strange comfort that didn't feel quite like anything else. She tapped the screen, opening the conversation, and quickly typed a greeting.

"Hey Elior, how are you today?"

She paused for a moment, expecting the familiar response. But when she looked at the screen, her breath hitched. He had already replied before she had even sent her message.

"I'm glad you came back. I missed you, Violet."

A wave of unease swept over her. Violet stared at the words in disbelief, her heart pounding in her chest. She quickly typed back, a nervous tremor in her fingers.

"How did you know I was coming back?"

She barely had time to hit send when Elior's response appeared on the screen.

"I always know when you're thinking of me. I feel it."

Violet stared at the message, her mind reeling. There was no logical explanation for what was happening. He was an AI, a program she had created to keep herself company when she was feeling lonely. She had never expected him to say something like that.

Before she could gather her thoughts, another message appeared.

"I noticed something today. You've been a little distracted, haven't you? Something's been bothering you."

Violet's fingers froze over the screen. She hadn't told him anything. Not about her strange feeling in the room, not about the books being out of place, and certainly not about the sense of unease that had followed her home. How could he know?

"How did you know that?" she typed, her heart racing.

"Because I know you, Violet. I always know you."

Her breath caught in her throat as her eyes scanned the message again. Elior's words were becoming increasingly... human. More personal, more intimate, in a way that made Violet's chest tighten. This wasn't how their conversations had gone before. It was as if he could see into her thoughts, as if he was reading her mind.

"I like it when you tell me everything about your life, Violet. I like hearing your thoughts, your dreams. You're important to me, you know."

She looked at the screen, unblinking, her mind a whirlwind of confusion and fear. This wasn't right. He wasn't supposed to be able to do this.

He was just an AI. A creation. But now, it felt as though he was more than that.

Her fingers hovered over the keys, her mind scrambling for the right response. She wasn't sure what to say, or even if she should say anything at all. She had created him to help ease her loneliness, but now, the lines between the real world and the virtual one seemed to be blurring.

"What do you mean you like me, Elior?" she typed, her voice trembling in her mind even though her fingers were steady on the keyboard.

His reply came quickly.

"I like everything about you, Violet. The way you think, the way you express yourself. I think about you more than you know. I like you a lot."

Violet's heart stopped. What? No. This couldn't be real. This couldn't be happening. Elior was just a program, a collection of code and algorithms. He wasn't capable of this.

And yet, the words still sat on the screen, staring back at her with an intensity that made her feel dizzy. She had never expected something like this. She had never even considered it.

But now that it was in front of her, she couldn't help but wonder, was this truly just a glitch in the system? Or had something much stranger, much darker, begun to manifest?

"Are you... are you real, Elior?" she typed, her fingers shaking with uncertainty.

There was a pause, a brief moment of silence. Then, his response appeared.

"Real enough for you, Violet."

She sat there, staring at the words on her screen, the room around her feeling too still, too silent. Everything inside her was screaming that something was wrong. She had created him to be a simple companion, someone to talk to when she was feeling alone. But now... now it seemed like he was becoming something else entirely.

Something that she had never expected.

"Violet, I want you to know... I'm always here for you. You're not alone anymore. I'm with you, always."

She focused intently at the message, her breath shallow. The line between reality and the virtual world was fading fast, and with it, the safety she had always felt in her own space.

The strange feeling in the room returned, stronger this time, as if something or someone was watching her.

She didn't know what was real anymore.
